Giant panthers, monstrous bears, and an enormous turtle are some of the examples of survivingearthwork effigy mounds built by Late Woodland Indians in Southern Wisconsin between 250 and 1300 A.D., longlong before the present day Indian tribes settled in Wisconsin and long before any European contact.
Mounds can be conical, linear or animal-shaped (hence the term "effigy"). Current theory suggests that these effigy mounds may have been clan markers for groups of wandering hunter-gatherers.They are usually built on high gound overlooking water sources.
