He's earned it -- let Kopp retire gracefully

With Ken Kopp's Fine Foods slated to close in the spring, many loyal customers of his Monroe Street grocery store are already mourning their loss. If those customers care about the 70-year-old Kopp, however, they won't stand in the way of his plans to sell his property to Walgreen's Drug Store or some other willing buyer.

Kopp cited health problems and lack of profit as reasons to close. The ever-friendly Kopp has been a grocer his entire working life, the last 20 years at 1864 Monroe St. It's time to say goodbye to tomatoes, bananas and sirloin, and hello to retirement.

It would be unfortunate if the same shoppers who support Kopp's store refuse to let him get out of the business. If neighbors or city officials decide that a Walgreen's is somehow not appropriate for that spot or that "affordable housing" must be a part of the deal -- the property is likely to lose value. The store is Ken Kopp's retirement plan, folks. Not everyone is covered by the State Investment Board.

Who knows? Maybe the publicity surrounding Kopp's plans will lead to someone buying his business as a grocery and keeping it open. But with the economics of the grocery business today, don't count on it. In the meantime, give Ken Kopp a chance to ease into retirement. He's earned it.
