DMNA Honored for Pedestrian Flags
On Thursday, October, 17th the DMNA was presented with the BeSafe Award for Advocacy for it’s role with pedestrian flags at the Safe Communities Madison-Dane County 7th Annual BeSafe Awards ceremony.
At the DMNA Council meeting on Wednesday, November 6th the award was presented to Neuhauser Pharmacy for their efforts in helping to manage the flags in front of their store.   Peg Breuer from Neuhauser was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the neighborhood residents, businesses, and visitors who have helped to make the flags a success.
These “ped flags” are tools pedestrians can use to signal motorists of their intention to cross the street, in keeping with Wisconsin state law which requires that cars yield to pedestrians.  The success of the flags in the Dudgeon-Monroe neighborhood has led to widespread usage within Dane County.  Since the flags were first introduced in the Dudgeon-Monroe neighborhood in 2001 these neighborhoods and communities have established sites of their own: Schenk Atwood Starkweaterh Yahara (SASY), Vilas, Regent, Bay Creek, Westmoreland and Tenney Lapham neighborhoods in Madison; Villages of Marshall, DeForest and Cottage Grove; and Cities of Stoughton and Middleton.
Many thanks to the volunteers who work to maintain the flags and to all of you who continue to use them.
