ABOUT THE PARKS AND GARDENS COMMITTEE

OUR LEGACY

Our neighborhood benefits from a long City and County history of acquiring, improving, and maintaining parks to provide healthy, beautiful spaces for residents, beginning with the Park and Pleasure Drive Association’s efforts and our Parks Division support of these places for everyone to enjoy. Our Parks Committe works to maintain and improve this legacy for future generations.

OUR COMMITTEE

We focus on two long established parks— Wingra Park & Glenwood Children’s Park—as well as smaller areas, including orchard gardens, working within the rules the city provides. Volunteers can choose between sites and among tasks, since there is always something to do. We provide training and support.

OUR PROJECTS

  • Wingra Park volunteers maintain native plantings, an edible garden and fruit orchard, and report unhealthy trees to city parks, as well as educate folks about the emerald ash borer and fundraise for sporadic treatment and new plantings.  We also join Parks Cleanup Day every April, and join other groups to host social events for summer concerts, 4th of July childrens’ parade, and other activities.

  • Glenwood Children’s Park volunteers maintain native plants and shrubs. We spend time removing invasive plants, planting better ones, and working with the City to identify and support repairing various historic and crumbling  structures and areas. aThis park has been flooded and eroded several times recently. Many sections are still very accessible and we use these for social gatherings (picnics, music in the park days, and the winter solstice bonfire).

  • We also host garden and historical tours of both parks, and are open to new ideas for compatible events.
